Netgem i-Player
First Digital Terrestrial Television set-top-box with
e-mail and web browsing
Not only is the new Netgem i-Player an excellent Freeview Digital TV receiver, but it also provides e-mail and web browsing facilities via a local rate telephone connection. Family members can each have their own email address. Access to a range of on-line games is pre-set and there's instant access to all sorts of useful information and services: telephone numbers, heavily discounted CD's and on-line flight booking to name just a few.
When the on-line services are being accessed the picture-in-picture facility allows for continued viewing of television programmes. And with state-of-the-art parental-control protection, the kids cannot access anything that is out of bounds.
Equipped with two SCART sockets and TV signal loop-through, connections between the i-Player and other equipment, such as DVD player or VCR, are easy and flexible.
For connection to home cinema amplifiers there is an optical audio output as well as a phono-out connector. Web connections are made through the on-board 56k V90 modem and a USB connector makes it possible to link up a colour printer for printing web-pages or details of purchases made. You can even connect a Web-cam to the USB for e-mailing still images and a 'common interface' provides the route for future upgrades and services.
Included with the i-Player is everything needed to operate the device: SCART lead, aerial fly lead, telephone cable, double telephone socket adaptor and remote control - from which text can be entered.
'What Satellite & Digital TV' magazine (Feb 2003) has reviewed this product and rated it "a top-class DTT receiver. Whether you choose to buy one for the online content or not, this is a desirable piece of kit"
